Dan @ 15 months old

Dear Dan

You turned 15 months old today and in this past month, we saw you really walking independently. You gained confidence daily as you practised your walking and now you don’t need us to hold your hand that often.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

For a while, I was wondering what took you so long to begin walking and now…

img_4685

It gets easier to feed you now because you are more open to eating other types of food, and that include ours! You heavily relied on pureed food for the past few months and now you are eating porridge and even rice. You still don’t like meat but I guess I would have to slowly introduce them to you. You love bread and could have them for your three meals but of course, that won’t do! Now, it seems you want to self-feed and mama has to close both eyes for you to do that. Just imagine the mess! But it’s all part of learning, isn’t it?

We stay home most of the time and that are so many things to do such as painting, doodling, scooping of pom pom balls and threading. You love to explore every nook and corner of the house and then you will pull out the drawers and take out whatever containers you can find in there. Basically, messing up the place is your past time. Arghh…

img_4540-1

You love to explore, just like your sister and you are not afraid to try new things! May you continue to possess such a spirit!

img_4202

Bubbles! Who doesn’t love them? Mama loves to see you enjoy yourself and you don’t seem to be afraid of strangers, especially when your sister is around.

You love the playground a lot and enjoy these rides! When we are at your sister’s school, you will find your way to these rides, sometimes wandering off without me!

img_5242

img_4673

You share your sister’s love for Sandra Boynton’s book – Moo, Baa, La La La – and got equally amused, like your sister. We could enjoy many of her books because a fellow mommy so generously loaned them to us. Thank God for her.

img_4230

You love to play with water. Maybe we should get you to go to the pool more regularly eh?

img_4987

I wish you could nap and sleep more. It’s really difficult to get you to rest and I’m not sure why. Aren’t you tired? I have to say that we are all tired out by you. Could you please cooperate a wee bit?

Having said that, we still thank God for you, a precious gift from God.

One year old

Last year, this day, I held you in my arms. You were so small then but at the same time, I was amazed by the strength in which your fingers grasped mine.

One year on and I’m constantly thankful to God for bringing you into our lives.

Blessed birthday, dear son, and may you grow in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Dan’s 1st birthday

Birthday celebration. Purpose? To create memories and hopefully, they are good ones.

Over the weekend, we organised a small celebration for my family at our apartment. It was a simple affair. I prepared dinner for them and it was a privilege to do so since there wasn’t much opportunity to do that often; everyone is busy. Of course, the highlight is the dessert table. I am perhaps the only person who is excited about this. I love the idea of a dessert table but didn’t like the work. Faith didn’t have her first birthday celebration because we were too lazy to organise one. Her subsequent birthdays included a cake which was an improvement. This time round, I thought I should be a bit more diligent and organise a slightly more elaborate one for Dan and Faith in November.

Okay, I would disclose a bit more. It’s because I was a bit bored and wanted to do something more exciting and thus decided to do a dessert table. The fact that I came across some adorable party decor further fuelled my interest. When I told the hubs about my intention, he ROLLED HIS EYES. Oh, whatever! ;p

img_9711

On Saturday morning, I gathered the party decor and baked a pandan chiffon cake and sugar cookies before going through the mundane – doing the laundry, sending the girl to swim class, cleaning the bathroom, etc.

The theme was about polar bear and friends, just because the party decor that I bought contain those pictures. I know this is not very creative of me but I wouldn’t want to spend too much time thinking about themes. Besides, I’m quite sure Daniel doesn’t mind at all.

img_9421

Dinner comprised pan-fried salmon, a stir-fried broccoli dish, baked honey mustard chicken wings, seaweed chicken bites, soy sauce braised pork belly dish and fishball, meatball soup. So happy that they were all wiped out or was it because I didn’t prepare sufficiently? Geez…

img_9605

The dessert table was set up after dinner. Okay, my family was like ‘whatever, we just want dessert’; they didn’t really care about aesthetics. However, they graciously allowed me to do my thing and I promptly did so while trying to avoid their what-are-you-doing look.

And so, there you have it – Daniel’s first birthday celebration. I have created some memories for the children! Yay! I did have fun designing and coming up with the simple dessert table. Maybe I could do something for Faith’s birthday as well?

Hmm, that will depend on whether I have the time and energy then. ;p

P.S. A special thanks to my sister who helped me capture the memories using the Canon EOS M10.

img_7785

Dan turned 11 months old today. One more month to go! Woot!

I thought I should pen down some of his developments after reading his sister’s post a few days back.

:: Diet

Since weaning him off BM, his appetite increased by leaps and bounds. He consumes his puree stuff really quickly and needs to top up with FM. I am less adventurous with him and only supplied him with vegetables and fruits thus far. He eats carrots, green peas, beetroot, pumpkin, butternut squash, spinach, corn, potato and sweet potato. He loves fruits and has tasted honeydew, apple, pears, grapes, peach and bananas. Biscuits? Yes, of course.

His daily meal schedule @ 11MO

6.30am – Breakfast (Milk, Bread or cereal with milk)

8am – Cereal with milk, biscuits or banana

8.30 to 10/10.30am – Nap

11am – Lunch (puree with brown rice/cereal)

1.30pm – Milk

2pm to 4pm – Nap

4pm – Snack (fruits)

5.30pm – Dinner (Puree with brown rice/ cereal)

7.30pm – Milk

8pm – Zzzzzz

img_6716

Because he eats a lot, he poos daily. It’s a good thing. ;p

:: Physical development

I hate to compare but sub-consciously, I find myself comparing him to Faith. Dan is extremely active but doesn’t like to learn to stand on his own. He will cruise though and crawl all over the place. I think it will take a while for him to walk independently. It’s okay. Meanwhile, crawl more!

img_7200

He has 8 teeth as of now and I think more are coming out, judging by how much he drools.

:: Social

Dan is a happy boy and doesn’t make much noise when he is out with us. He seems to be comfortable with strangers AS LONG AS we are around. He flashes his sweetest smiles at the ladies he meets and this makes them happy.

Hmmm, he can be rather cheeky and will purposely do things that Mama says ‘cannot’! When he knows he has done something wrong, he will look up and flash his smile again. Grrr..

:: Relationship with sibling

It’s a love-love relationship as of now. Pls stay that way!

:: Others

img_6120

Loves to explore his surrounding…

img_6750

His favourite corner…loves nuts and bolts.

img_6348

Loves all things round

img_6913

Likes to mess up the books in the library. Tsk tsk.

img_7198

His mother wishes he would love to read more than he messes the bookshelves.

img_6909

Observes more than he screams when he is in the car seat these days. He waves his hands to bid folks farewell, claps his hands when we ask him to, raises his hand when we sing a familiar tune that he has heard in Sparkanauts, sign to show that he wants to eat and likes to use his fingers to poke.

Speech-wise, I think he is a man of few words. ;(

img_6929

Future F1 driver

img_7388

Dislikes being in the water.Sigh!

img_7478

So, here he is at 11 months old. Stay happy!

Dan’s 1st BB Spa at Beauty.Mums & Babies

If you are a first-time mother, life can get pretty daunting as you navigate this new phase of your life. I remember surfing for information every other day and got stressed up over the many choices of (pre- and post-natal) services  that are available in the market. So I’m appreciative of one-stop wellness centres which help expecting and new mums ease comfortably into motherhood. One notable one is Beauty.Mums & Babies.

Beauty.Mums & Babies aims to guide mothers-to-be and new mothers from pregnancy to birth and through till infancy and toddler care by providing a range of services to prepare them to have a smooth-sailing motherhood journey as well as regaining health and confidence after birth.

Of their core services, Dan and I tried their BB Spa at Paragon.

img_5568

BB spa or more commonly known as a Baby Spa is an hydrotherapy environment where babies are gently put to float in a tailored tub. And it almost feels like a must-do with babies. I remember getting Faith to have her first experience of it when she was just three months old. It was rather easy to get her to enjoy that session; it was with minimal fuss. With Daniel, I waited until he was about 6 months old but by then it was a lot more challenging to get him into the water. Thankfully, he didn’t reject it although there was a slight resistance towards it in the first 5 minutes.

img_8238

There are many baby spas in Singapore but the BB Spa at Beauty.Mums & Babies stands out because it is the first to use the purest filtration method called ‘Naturalizer Kirameki Water’ from Japan to provide water as pure as spring water to treat babies’ skin. The extensive filtration method ensures safety for babies, and gets rid of carcinogenic unfiltered water. Bacteria and chemicals that may cause skin irritation are all thoroughly removed. It also contains 25 different beneficial minerals that nourishes and hydrates babies’ skin and helps to balance the pH of their skin such that it reduces its sensitivity.

img_5569

Too much information? Hah, so that you are well aware of the goodness of the water! Anyway, this is a fine piece of news to me since Dan’s skin is prone to eczema. Perhaps, with constant contact with such pure water, the eczema could be treated? You’ll never know!

The benefits to a baby spa are aplenty. Some of the key benefits are:

:: Improve skin conditions
:: Supports brain and physical development
:: Increases lung capacity
:: Strengthens cardiovascular system
:: Builds up immunity system
:: Stimulates innate swimming reflexes and co-ordination
:: Teaches babies to understand their environment

Dan and I visited the BB Spa at Paragon and the following are what I like about our experience there:

:: Clean and cozy environment. I am rather particular where cleanliness is concerned with regard to baby spa and I’m pleased with how well and neat the space is kept and maintained.

:: Experienced therapist. By the time Dan tried baby spa, he could well recognise faces and normally take some time to warm up to a stranger. The therapist showed her understanding in this area by not rushing through the process. She got Dan to be comfortable with her and showed him around the space. After some warm up and stretching exercises, Dan was well on his way to having a splashing good time.

img_0277

:: Multi-sensory experience. With bubbles, whirlpool jets, soothing light and heaps of little toys to choose from, Dan soon got engrossed in this form of waterplay! It’s such a delight to see him enjoying himself!

:: Relaxing massage. After the session, the therapist used gentle, soothing and loving strokes to massage the boy. The boy calmed down almost immediately and I learnt a stroke or two about baby massage.

BB spa is suitable for babies from 1 month old onwards so if you are interested, do take a trip down and treat your baby to a great workout!

While you are there, do check out the other wonderful services that they provide such as:

:: Infant, pediatric, toddler and children massage
:: Pre- and post-natal massage
:: Mummy & baby yoga
:: Pre- and post-natal yoga, couple yoga
:: Facial and beauty treatments
:: Lactation clinic
:: Baby care workshops and classes
:: Pregnancy and baby wellness workshops

Told you that you will be spoilt for choice, didn’t I?

You brought joy to the world, now it’s time to revel in bliss, like the queen that you are..

Dan is 7 months old

Dan turns 7 months old!

Dear Dan

How you have grown! You are 7 months old today! It’s been a joy seeing you develop over the months and I’m sure you enjoyed the culinary adventure over this past month.

You like sweet potato, pear, peas, carrot and parsnip but you frown at apple (so weird) and banana. I would have thought you love them! In any case, I’ll try again.

You are very much attached to me and since you can recognise faces now, it’s all the more difficult for me to get your Ah Gong or any other persons to look after you, even for a short while. You will cry non-stop till I come back and seeing your tears makes me guilty. You must understand that I need time off and I cannot always stick with you. I do need a break, my dear boy. Very soon, you will realise that your doting grandfather is fun to be with!

Your two lower teeth have finally appeared and that also means that we could have easier nights as compared to the weeks that you were teething. I know it really hurt you but that is part of growing up!

I thought I heard you cry out “Mama, Mama” for me to come to you, especially in the morning. I wasn’t hearing things, was I?

You adore your sister and was so tickled by her silly jokes each time we went to fetch her from school. I hope you will continue to look up to her because she is really an awesome sister. She holds no ill feelings towards you even though she gets ticked off because of you. See, she has a magnanimous heart. Learn from her!

These pictures were taken shortly after the March school holidays and your rash/eczema got so bad that we had to sent you to the dermatologist who prescribed a mild steroid and antibiotic cream for you. It wasn’t the best solution but since natural remedies didn’t help and your condition worsened each day, I felt like I was at wit’s end and decided to resort this form of medication. Thankfully, it really healed and till today, your condition is under control. We are praying that it won’t flare up again!

Mama and Papa love you and your sister a lot. Continue to grow well!

Dan on solids!

The boy is 2 weeks shy of turning 6 months old but I think it’s time that I start him on solids.

He has been showing interest in our food when we are at our dining table and could sit up well on the high chair. These are signs that he could be ready.

Yesterday I introduced him to porridge and I guess the experience was not too bad!

With Faith, our journey was a smooth one, thanks to Petit Bowl. I do recommend new parents to pay them a visit and attend their group sampling session and learn a thing or two about preparing solids for your little ones. Personally I was enriched.

This time round, I would make my own batch if time allows. Failing which I could still turn to Petit Bowl or commercial ones (note: I’m highly selective about this) for help! Alternatively, there are a good number of Youtube videos which could help you in this adventure. The most important thing is to have fun in the kitchen! I love this one from Farm to Table Baby Mama. Hope it will be of help to you!

The journey continues…

Dan is 5 months old!

The boy turned 5 months old yesterday. How time flies!

5MO Dan is a cheerful boy and loves to flip when he’s placed on the mat or gym. He flashes his most charming smile whenever people chat him up. He’s relatively easy to take care of except…. that he wants to be carried when he naps in the daytime. Thankfully, I have my trustworthy Boba carrier.

One more month and we are off to a culinary adventure. First, let me read up!!

Dear Daniel (@ 4 months old)

IMG_1062

Dear Daniel

You turned 4 months old today! And mama realised that she hasn’t been recording much of your development. It’s not that you are less precious than your sister. It’s just that Mama is learning how to handle both of you and the learning curve is super steep. Now that things have gotten better, I’d better lock some of those memories here.

I remember during your first month, I asked the confinement lady if she was tired since she had to wake up in the middle of the night to bottle-feed you and her reply was,”He’s easy to take care of. Cry so softly and it’s like whimpering unlike some of the babies who scream. He’s considered gentle to me.”

I laughed at her comments but it’s so true. I have not really heard you cry that loudly. The only few times that you did was when you were hungry in the car and when I showered you. Since then, I make sure that you have your fill before we go places.

You take to the bottle well which is a relief for me since Papa is doing the night shift and that means I do not have to wake up in the middle of the night to feed you. I hope you are not giving him a difficult time! He has to work in the daytime, you know? But he has graciously offered to do the night shift because he knows I need the sleep or maybe he’s worried that I would harm you and Jie Jie if I don’t have enough rest? *Just kidding* On the average, you wake up 2 times for milk according to Papa and we didn’t bother to sleep train you since by doing that, you might wake Jie Jie up who has school the next day. We certainly hope you will grow out of it in due time, just like your Jie Jie.

I want you to know that you have an awesome sister who treasures you a lot. Whenever Mama asks her to look after you, she would never refuse me because she just wants to spend time with you and take care of you like a good Jie Jie. She wishes that you would grow up quickly though because she can’t wait to play with you.

IMG_0157

You are very predictable and adhere to the same routine each day. You nap every 2 hours and have a longer 3-hour nap in the afternoon before retiring for the day at 7pm each day. In terms of bedtime, I must say you are much better than your sister. I don’t have to sing you songs or rock you to sleep. You just, well, fall asleep. Because of that, I could spend the evening with your sister. What a wonderful brother you are!

Today, you flipped and I missed you in action as your sister was asking me to play with her. I got distracted. Sigh! But it’s a neat surprise when I turned to see you in that “flipped” position! I was quite sure your neck was not strong enough since I didn’t really conduct tummy time often enough for you. So, I was surprised and literally cried for joy.

IMG_1019

Mama likes the way you observe your surrounding and this shows that you have a curious mind (colloquially we term it as ‘kaypoh’) and I absolutely love it when you flash that smile of yours whenever we chat you up. So adorable. Stay that way, will you?

IMG_1060

Mama will try to record your milestones and development diligently from now on. It has not be an easy 4 months but I’m reminded that I can always count on the Lord for strength daily. May you grow up to love the Lord and seek Him always.

Love
Mama
